  1. Elen's parents are spending the summer without her. Elen can't go with them on their travels and has to stay with her grandmother instead. Gran has a house on a small island and isn't very accommodating. Elen feels very alone. The only thing she can do is some exploring with the map her grandmother has drawn for her. While she's doing that she meets a strange boy who has a puffin. They initially don't get along very well and they keep running into each other. When there's a big storm and Elen's [...]

  2. I bought this book for my boyfriend's niece, as it's set in Wales and written by a local writer. I thought I'd give it a quick look through before passing it on. Two wonderful hours later I'd finished it and was googling the author to see if she'd written anything else! Though clearly a children's book, Elen's Island is written with such sharp humour and sensitivity it appeals to an adult's inner child just as much. It's also been given a big thumb's up from the little girl it was intended for!

  3. This is a charming little book for younger readers. It says age 7-9 but I think at 9 I might have found it a little boring. That may just be me though. As an adult I could see the charm in it. I love Captain Beaky and also Elen's response to the skull (letting it see out the window is totally something I would do!).

  4. Beautiful, funny, quietly moving and I loved the strong lead character: Elen is feisty, bright, edgy and almost as grumpy as her gran who she is forced to stay with on a wild island in west Wales. A hint of lost treasure, new friendships, re-discovered love, a pet puffin and some old-school charm, this is a wonderful book.

  5. I loved this book as an adult, and I know that as a child I would have adored it too. An island to discover would have been my idea of paradise! Elen’s Island is so beautifully written and such an inspiring read for children that it totally deserves 5 stars. Set on a very small island in Wales with few inhabitants, Eloise Williams has created a perfect environment to explore the themes of family relationships and making friends, and also landscape and nature. The illustrations by Gabby Grant a [...]
