    1. Melisande is the fifth book in the Châteaux and Shadows series by Philippa Lodge. I have only read one other book in the series, but I think I am correct in saying that each book can be read as a stand alone one.Melisande is a young woman born to a family of magic, witches. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't seem to have any powers so is a disappointment to her mother. They live in poverty, and apart from being lonely, she is content with her lot. She has never met her father, he was a married [...]

    2. Melisande (Chateaux and Shadows Book 5) by Philippa Lodge is a story about two people who come into each other's lives and a seed of love is sprouted. Melisande has spent all of her life living in the slums with her mother and brother. She's never known her father, who has never acknowledged her, believing her mother bewitched him into being with her for their brief time together. Melisande has no "gift" for witchcraft but because of who her mother is, she has been labeled as such. When Luc, god [...]

    4. This book is a great read!!! The beginning caught my attention, and from that point on I grew interested enough in the story to not only care about the main character the book is named after, but also the other characters who showed her kindness. She is a young woman accused of many dangerous and painful life positions--witch, illegitimate young woman living with family that have no value in that society. Her heart, however, is good and her way of considering life and the people she encounters t [...]

    5. Melisande has had a very hard start to her life being an illegitimate child to Comte, also her mother has brought her up and they have been totally poor and hounded out of villages because her mother is a practicing witch. So when she gets the chance for her father to own up to Melisande being his daughter she is willing to do almost anything especially if it means she can make her mother and brothers life easier in the end.But coming from a background of witchcraft isn't going to make Melisande [...]

    6. An intriguing love story full of secrets and sprinkled with witchcraft! This story hooks readers from the very beginning! I was fascinated by the tale and you can't help but root for Melisandre throughout all the turmoil and hard times. I have a soft spot for historical romances, they really are fascinating, but this is the first time I really felt transported into the story. Very well written and just very interesting plot. This is the first book by Phillippa Lodge I have read, but I can say it [...]

    7. The writer's portrait of the overwhelming decadence of the rich and royals, as well as the abject destitution and hunger of the poor is clearly painted. And on the steps of humanity, even lower than the poor, clings the heroine, Melisande and her family since they are witches. Despite everything Melisande is not a sobbing, cowering victim. I liked her. Actually, I liked the whole book, though I did wish I could step into the pages with a paddle to swing at a few heads. Very provoking story. The [...]

    8. This was an amazing book! It was witty and charming. The main characters were engaging and the writing was superb. This was my first story by Philippa Lodge and I look forward to reading much, much more from her! I loved it!

    9. Wonderfully written storyline just hooked me in from the very beginning and the well developed characters kept me totally enchanted until the very end!I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

    10. The author did a superb job writing this story. I was immediately intrigued by this story when I started reading it. The storyline was well planned and executed. This was my first story in the series and the first book that I have read by Philippa Lodge, but I plan on looking into more stories by this author and definitely this series specifically. I felt the author did a marvelous job with character development and really conveying the differences between the two main characters. I also really [...]
