    1. Gorgeously and richly illustrated (on every page!) by John Howe, one of the best contemporary fantasy artists (he was one of the two main artists (with Alan Lee) working on Lord of the Rings). Don't let McCaffrey's name on this book mislead you--this isn't about Pern. Rather, it is a story of two friends sitting around the fireplace sharing tales of dragons from major fantasy authors. You get a few dozen summaries of tales, and get to enjoy the broad versatility of Howe's soft and fluid artistic [...]

    2. My brother had this book on his shelf for years through our childhood. I would flip through the giant pages and stare at the drawings, never reading a word. When cleaning out his bookshelf, I got to keep the book and decided to actually try to read it. Turns out it is more enjoyable for the art than the writing. The book reads like a sitcom clip show, there is a frame story that is semi-interesting and then a bunch of pieces from other dragon stories that are just long enough to draw you in befor [...]

    3. The story is engaging, and it's fun to read bits about all the different dragons, particularly when it helps you discover new books and authors, but the real reason that this book gets 5 stars from me are John Howe's absolutely awe-inspiring illustrations. The book is big and beautiful and worth every cent to be able to browse through those lovelies again and again. As a side note, despite the parenthesis in the title of this book, it is not a Pern novel at all.

    4. This is an amazing book with snippets from some of the best writers on Dragons and their tales. From classics to unknowns and some you may have just heard about. Some of the greatest Dragons are mentioned in this book. And the artwork accompanying is makes the tales so much more. This is currently a favorite of my daughters bed time reads.

    5. I've always loved Anne McCaffrey's Pern series but this book was a disappointment. It was mostly a bunch of quotes from other scifi-fantasy books about dragons with a little bit of a story thrown in for good measure. I give it an extra star because of the great art work.

    6. An absolutely fascinating look at the history of dragons. Anne McCaffrey takes us through a tour of dragons from religion, folklore and literature in a fun way with herself as one of the characters.

    7. wondrously illustrated, and containing a veritable bounty of Draconic lore makes me realise I've a long way to go before I've read all there is!

    8. A Diversity of DragonsMcCaffrey, Annethis book descriptions and ideas about dragons from history and mythology, it has great pictures and ideals

    9. I found this book loaded with many tales of dragons some ancient, some not so ancient but all were great to read about. I think I'll read this one again and again.
